Mechanism of action

Natural progestin binding progesterone receptors. Maintains pregnancy, suppresses estrus, and has anti-inflammatory effects on endometrium.

Side effects & warnings

Used for luteal insufficiency and pregnancy maintenance. Exogenous progestins can cause pyometra, mammary neoplasia, diabetes, and acromegaly with prolonged use.

Species-specific contraindications and adverse-reaction reports for sheep may differ from canine / feline reference data — consult the primary citations listed with each rule.

Progesterone dosing in other species

Why a species-specific page? Progesterone pharmacokinetics differ across species: dose ranges, intervals, and route preferences are not interchangeable. Cross-extrapolation from canine doses is unsafe in sheep — the rules above are the citations specific to this species, not generic recommendations.
