Harris Hawk

Parabuteo unicinctus

Bird · Typical weight 0.571.00 kg

Clinical context for harris hawk dosing

Harris's hawks (Parabuteo unicinctus) are the most commonly kept falconry raptor in North America and Europe, and show marked reverse sexual dimorphism — females run substantially heavier than males, so dosing on a species average rather than the measured weight introduces real error. Aspergillosis is the defining respiratory disease of captive raptors and drives most antifungal use; itraconazole and voriconazole are standard, with therapeutic drug monitoring advisable given interpatient variability. Trichomoniasis ('frounce') acquired from columbid prey is a routine indication for carnidazole. Bumblefoot (pododermatitis) is the classic husbandry-driven condition of perching raptors and needs antimicrobial choice guided by culture.
