Mechanism of action

Selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor. Provides anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects with reduced GI toxicity compared to non-selective NSAIDs.

Side effects & warnings

For horses only. Do not use in horses intended for food. GI ulceration can still occur, especially with concurrent corticosteroids. Not for use with other NSAIDs.

Species-specific contraindications and adverse-reaction reports for horse may differ from canine / feline reference data — consult the primary citations listed with each rule.

Why a species-specific page? Firocoxib (Equine) pharmacokinetics differ across species: dose ranges, intervals, and route preferences are not interchangeable. Cross-extrapolation from canine doses is unsafe in horse — the rules above are the citations specific to this species, not generic recommendations.
