Provides elemental iron for incorporation into hemoglobin and iron storage proteins. IM depot slowly releases iron over weeks.
Used for iron deficiency anemia when oral iron insufficient. Anaphylaxis risk (test dose recommended). Pain and staining at IM injection site. Dark discoloration of feces.
