Mechanism of Action

Nucleotide analogue that inhibits viral DNA polymerase. Does not require viral kinase activation. Active against CMV, adenovirus, polyomavirus, poxviruses.

Side effects & warnings

Severely nephrotoxic — must co-administer probenecid and IV hydration. Neutropenia. Ocular toxicity. Monitor renal function closely.
