Great Horned Owl

Bubo virginianus

Bird · Typical weight 0.901.80 kg

Clinical context for great horned owl dosing

Great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) are the most frequently rehabilitated owl in North America. Strigiform pharmacology is less well characterised than falconiform, so much owl dosing is extrapolated from raptors as a class rather than from owl-specific studies — ExoticRx flags the evidence level where that is the case. Trauma, particularly vehicle strike, is the dominant presentation and drives analgesic and antimicrobial use. Owls have a proportionally large body-to-weight ratio from plumage, so visual weight estimation is unreliable and dosing must follow the measured weight.
