US brand names:Ilotycin Ophthalmic
Contraindicated in Chinchilla, Guinea Pig, Rabbit, Hamster, Degu
Erythromycin Ophthalmic is dosed at CAVEAT FROM SOURCE: dose_unit reads 'mg/kg' on a 0/0 topical placeholder; the correct unit for this row is a '1/4-1/2 inch strip' (Plumb's notes erythromycin is not available as an ophthalmic solution — ointment only, so '1 drop' would be wrong too) in dogs, per Gelatt KN et al., Veterinary Ophthalmology, 6th Ed (2021), Ch.19 Diseases and Surgery of the Canine Cornea and Sclera, printed p.1097 (corpus PDF p.1120) — SOURCE EDITION: Veterinary Ophthalmology — ISBN 9781119441830, https://openlibrary.org/isbn/9781119441830. Verify against current literature before clinical use.
Macrolide antibiotic binding 50S ribosomal subunit. Bacteriostatic. Active against gram-positive bacteria and some Mycoplasma.
Safe for use with corneal ulcers. Ointment form provides longer contact time and corneal lubrication. Well tolerated. Limited gram-negative activity.
