Metabolized to phenobarbital (major active metabolite) and phenylethylmalonamide (PEMA). Anticonvulsant effect primarily from phenobarbital metabolite.
Hepatotoxic — more so than phenobarbital alone. Monitor liver enzymes. No advantage over phenobarbital in most cases. DEA Schedule IV in some jurisdictions.
