Phentolamine is dosed at 0.02–0.1 mg/kg IV IV bolus, repeat q5min as needed in dogs, per Papich, Saunders Handbook of Veterinary Drugs, Phentolamine Mesylate monograph, Instructions for Use: "Results of clinical studies in animals have not been reported. Use in animals (and doses) is based on experience in people or anecdotal experience in animals. Titrate dose for eachttpatient to produce desired vasodilation." Competitive non-selective alpha-adrenergic antagonist causing vasodilation. Short-acting compared to phenoxybenzamine.
Used for hypertensive crisis (pheochromocytoma) and treatment of catecholamine extravasation. Tachycardia, hypotension. Short duration of action.
