Bismuth Subsalicylate is dosed at 0.25–2 ml/kg PO 3 to 4 times per day (q6-8h) in dogs, per Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook, 10th Ed (2023), PDF p.161 (printed p.134), DOGS - Acute diarrhea or as a GI 'coating agent'. Verify against current literature before clinical use.
Bismuth has antimicrobial and antisecretory effects. Salicylate component has anti-inflammatory and antiprostaglandin activity in the GI tract.
CONTRAINDICATED in cats (salicylate toxicity). Darkens stool (black). Contains salicylate — avoid with other NSAIDs. Interfere with abdominal radiographs (radiopaque).
