Imipenem-Cilastatin is dosed at 5–10 mg/kg IV q6-8h in cats, per Plumb's 10th ed printed p.644, Imipenem/Cilastatin Sodium monograph spanning p.644-645. Verify against current literature before clinical use.
Binds penicillin-binding proteins, inhibiting cell wall synthesis. Ultra-broad spectrum including many resistant organisms. Cilastatin prevents renal metabolism of imipenem.
Reserve for multi-drug resistant infections. May lower seizure threshold. Nausea and vomiting with rapid IV infusion. Administer IV slowly over 20-30 minutes.
