Mechanism of action

Anticholinergic (parasympatholytic) agent that reduces GI smooth muscle spasm by blocking muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the GI tract, decreasing motility and secretions.

Side effects & warnings

May cause anticholinergic side effects: dry mouth, urinary retention, tachycardia, mydriasis. Contraindicated in GI obstruction and glaucoma. Use cautiously in patients with cardiac disease.

Species-specific contraindications and adverse-reaction reports for dog may differ from canine / feline reference data — consult the primary citations listed with each rule.

Aminopentamide dosing in other species

Why a species-specific page? Aminopentamide pharmacokinetics differ across species: dose ranges, intervals, and route preferences are not interchangeable. Cross-extrapolation from canine doses is unsafe in dog — the rules above are the citations specific to this species, not generic recommendations.
