Mechanism of action

Prodrug rapidly converted to active metabolite (MHD) which blocks voltage-sensitive sodium channels and modulates high-voltage-activated calcium channels. Related to carbamazepine but better tolerated.

Side effects & warnings

Risk of hyponatremia. Cross-sensitivity with carbamazepine possible. Monitor sodium levels. Limited veterinary experience.

Species-specific contraindications and adverse-reaction reports for dog may differ from canine / feline reference data — consult the primary citations listed with each rule.

Oxcarbazepine dosing in other species

Why a species-specific page? Oxcarbazepine pharmacokinetics differ across species: dose ranges, intervals, and route preferences are not interchangeable. Cross-extrapolation from canine doses is unsafe in dog — the rules above are the citations specific to this species, not generic recommendations.
