Competitively blocks histamine H2 receptors on parietal cells, reducing basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion.
Inhibits cytochrome P450 enzymes (many drug interactions — theophylline, benzodiazepines, etc.). Less potent than famotidine. Gynecomastia with chronic use in humans. Give 30 min before meals.
