Omeprazole is dosed at 1–2 mg/kg PO q12-24h in african grey parrots, per Carpenter's Exotic Animal Formulary, 6th Ed. Verify against current literature before clinical use.
Irreversibly inhibits H+/K+-ATPase (proton pump) on parietal cells, providing potent and prolonged gastric acid suppression.
Must not be crushed (enteric-coated). Takes 3-5 days for full effect. Long-term use may affect calcium/magnesium absorption. Interacts with drugs requiring acid pH for absorption.
