Omeprazole is dosed at 20 mg/kg SC q12h in rabbits, per Carpenter's Exotic Animal Formulary, 6th ed (2023), rabbit table (Table 10.10): "20 mg/kg SC q12h" (ref 138, Lee M, Kallal S, Feldman M). Verify against current literature before clinical use.
Irreversibly inhibits H+/K+-ATPase (proton pump) on parietal cells, providing potent and prolonged gastric acid suppression.
Must not be crushed (enteric-coated). Takes 3-5 days for full effect. Long-term use may affect calcium/magnesium absorption. Interacts with drugs requiring acid pH for absorption.
